Home-Based Internet Marketing Business
Call it the new American dream. Everybody wants to work from home these days, and the Internet makes it possible. But there's a huge gap between possibility and reality. If you want to build a successful home-based Internet business you will need two things — a lot of determination, and plenty of solid advice.
We can't help you with the determination side of things. You'll have to find that within yourself. But we can certainly help with the advice part. Brandon Cornett (the publisher of this website) has operated a home-based Internet marketing business for years. And now, in this helpful collection of tips and ideas, he shares everything he knows about running a home business via the Web.
10 Tips for Running a Home Internet Business
by Brandon Cornett
When I left the military, I floated from one marketing job to the next. I didn't get fired or anything — I just lost interest. Eventually, the truth became clear to me. The only place where I would enjoy working was at home. So I took my Internet marketing skills and launched my own home-based business. Several years later I'm still at it, and I've learned quite a bit along the way.
Why am I sharing my bio with you? Because I'm going to give you what I needed when I first ventured into the home-based business world — a long list of tips and advice, straight from the real world. There are not theories I pulled out of some Internet marketing book. These are just some of things I've learned by running a home Internet business for several years. Enjoy!
- Determine your income requirements before you start. I'm talking bare minimum here, just for starters. You need to have an income target to aim for, and you need be able to hit that target before you "fire your boss" and move full time into your home-based Internet marketing business.
- Save money in preparation for your new business. If things don't take off as quickly as you hope, you'll need some cash reserves to hold you until they do take off.
- Choose a type of Internet marketing business that matches your personal interests. You are going to spend a lot of time running your home business (trust me on this one), so it needs to be something you're passionate about. After all, that's the whole point of starting your own gig, right?
- Diversify your Internet marketing business so you have different revenue sources. In other words, don't ever put all of your eggs into one basket. I am writing this article during the economic crisis of 2008, and let me tell you ... I'm glad I have a highly diverse business. Some of my revenue streams have dried up with the economy, but I'm able to double up my efforts to maximize other revenue channels. Diversify your operation!
- If you are serious about running a home-based Internet marketing business, and you want to succeed at it for years, you need to learn many skills. You should be expert (or at least highly proficient) with search engine optimization / SEO, blogging, online PR strategies, social media and more.
- SEO is a critical skill for anyone who operates an Internet business. So put some extra energy into learning about search engine optimization. To help you with this, I've even created an SEO Learning Center on one of my other sites.
- Work out your business model in advance, until you know exactly what you plan to do. Are you going to be an Internet publisher? A marketing consultant? Will you make your money from advertising, commission programs, product sales, or services rendered? Will you focus on a particular industry niche? Answering these questions in advanced will help you create a successful home-based business down the road.
- Play on your strengths. To be successful with an Internet marketing business, you have to focus on your strengths and minimize your weaknesses. For example, I love to write (can you tell?), so I offer web writing services as part of my home-based business model. What's a natural fit for you? What are you good at?
- Don't believe everything you read. Some people like to spend (waste?) all of their time in Internet marketing forums, debating strategies and techniques until they are blue in the face. Personally, I'd rather learn what works for myself. Learn enough to get started, and then get started! And keep in mind that anyone can publish anything online. There is no managing editor for the Internet.
- Find a balance between your work and your life. If you're not careful, you could spend the majority of your life running your home-based Internet marketing business ... which kind of defeats the purpose. Set working hours for yourself. When you've put in a good day of work, remind yourself that there's always tomorrow. What good is a home business if it burns you out worse than a "real world" job?
